Our Story

AJ

AJ_ProfileI was born in McAllen Texas on October 12, 1973. My parents have been missionaries in South Texas and northern Mexico for nearly 40 years. As a young child I accepted Christ as my personal Savior, but for many years I experienced doubts about my salvation. It was not until I reached High School and began to grow in grace that I finally experienced true assurance of my salvation. As a pre-teenager I surrendered my life to missions in a missions conference, but as a teenager I became interested in computer science and decided to pursue a career in that field. In 1991 I enrolled at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC with the goal of studying computer science, but my first semester of study the Lord led me to change my major to Bible. In the next few years God gave me a burden for Mexico (where I had spent much of my childhood) and specifically for training national pastors. With this goal in mind I decided to pursue first a master’s degree and then a Ph.D. in New Testament interpretation in order to prepare me for a teaching ministry. In 2004 we moved to Monterrey, Mexico to teach Bible and theology in a Christian college. While in Monterrey we were privileged to pastor a church planting ministry. In 2009 the Lord led us to work with To Every Tribe Ministries and the Center for Pioneer Church Planting.

Ruth

ruth-faceI grew up in a pastor’s home here in the United States. My parents introduced me to the things of the Lord from the very start, and some of my earliest memories are of my mother teaching me God’s Word. I was saved as a young child, and the Lord put in my heart a desire to serve and please Him. My parents were very careful to include me in their ministry, and I thank the Lord for the opportunities that I had to grow up heavily involved in the ministry of the local church. When I was in Jr. High, my church began an outreach to a nearby migrant community. This was my first sustained contact with Spanish-speaking people. I continued working with that ministry for about five years. In high school, the Lord impressed upon my heart the need to study Spanish which I did for four years. Looking back, I can see the Lord’s hand preparing me for the ministry to which He has called us. In 1993, the Lord directed me to Bob Jones University. There I studied education and music with the desire to better prepare myself for the Lord’s work. It was also there that I met A.J. I am very thankful for the many doors the Lord has opened and how He has directed our path to the mission field.

We were married in 1996 and in 2001 the Lord gave us our first son, Jonathan. Christian was born in 2003 while we were on deputation to go to Monterrey. We are very grateful for the boys that God has given to us and pray that they will surrender their lives to Christ. Jonathan and Christian are both homeschooled. Jonathan is in 4th grade this year and enjoys science and history. Christian is in 2nd grade and enjoys math and any kind of robust physical activity (especially if it’s dangerous!). Katelyn Grace was born on August 13, 2009. We plan on starting her in kindergarten in the fall (just kidding).
